NHL Trade Rumors: Roberto Luongo Will Move Before Rick Nash

Another day is passing, and the NHL's two hottest trade targets of the summer haven't moved an inch. Roberto Luongo is still a Vancouver Canuck, and Rick Nash is still a Columbus Blue Jacket.

SWR has already suggested that the two stars (and former Olympic teammates) be traded for one another, but apparently, that won't work as long as Vancouver is not on Nash's list of "approved" destinations for which he will waive his no-trade clause. Perhaps a creative solution would be for one of the teams that Nash will accept a trade to - the New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, etc. - to entice the Canucks into a three-way trade with the Blue Jackets, sending Nash to a preferred destination and Luongo out of Vancouver in one fell swoop. This, of course, presumes that Luongo would waive his no-trade clause, but we all know he's ready to go, and according to his most recent interviews, he's not ruling anybody out (even if he does prefer the Florida Panthers).

Whatever happens, though, don't expect Nash to move a second before Luongo does.

There isn't any inherent connection between Nash and Luongo, of course - unlike the theory that Zach Parise's signing with the Minnesota Wild would speed up the trade market on Parise - but Vancouver's situation, simply put, is a much more urgent one than Columbus'.

Columbus general manager Scott Howson has made it clear that he has certain expectations for any deal involving Nash, and he's perfectly happy to maintain the status quo until those expectations are met, even if it means Nash remaining in Columbus through the start of the 2012-13 season. His expectations may be unreasonably high - in Logan Couture and Jeff Skinner, Howson has pursued two players who are younger than Nash and put up similar numbers last year - but it makes sense. Columbus is in a rebuilding mode - or perhaps just a "building" mode, given that the Blue Jackets have made just one playoff appearance in their 11-year history - and whether Nash moves now, in August, or in December makes much less difference to the Blue Jackets' ability to build than what he gets in return. Nash is signed through 2018, so it's not like there's a "time bomb" factor after which Howson gets nothing in return.

Vancouver, on the other hand, has much more urgency for moving Luongo. The Canucks have made their choice and installed Cory Schneider as their starting goaltender, and every second that Luongo remains in Vancouver once training camp begins is a second in which he serves as a distraction, and an expensive distraction at that. That $5.3 million cap hit he carries into the next decade is also clogging up the works for a Canucks team that has just over $3 million in cap space. With 22 NHL players currently on the roster, the Canucks don't exactly have any pressing needs at the moment, but at the same time, if you're going to spend money, it's best to spend it on a player who helps the team. Luongo isn't staying in Vancouver as Schneider's backup, and everyone knows it.

SWR maintains that a creative GM should try to involve Luongo in a three-way Nash deal if "Bobby Lu" will accept a trade to Columbus. If that doesn't happen, though, expect to see Luongo long gone from Vancouver by the time Nash packs his bags in Columbus.
