Diego Maradona Fired By UAE Club Al Wasl

Diego Maradona was fired as coach by United Arab Emirates club Al Wasl, after an underwhelming season.

The Argentinian legend's position at the club had been uncertain after Al Wasl finished a disappointing eighth in UAE's Pro-League, since taking over in May last year. Maradona's future was put in further doubt after the entire board resigned following a season without a single trophy.

While Maradona kept saying he would stay on for one more year, the new board that met on Tuesday, decided to end his reign.

"Following a meeting held by the board of directors of Al-Wasl Football Company held today (Tuesday), to evaluate the technical staff of Al-Wasl Football Team under the leadership of coach Diego Maradona, it was decided to terminate the services of coach Diego Maradona and his technical staff," the club said in a statement.

Maradona still had a year remaining on his contract with the ambitious Dubai-based club, with the legendary player brought in to increase the club's profile and stature. Al Wasl was also linked with a move for former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, before the Ivorian's decision to move to Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua.

However, Maradona failed to inspire his team to greater heights and apart from finishing eighth; they were also knocked of the cup tournaments - the President's Cup and the Emirates Cup - in the quarterfinal stage.
