The Cleveland Cavaliers have not talked with Tristan Thompson yet about a contract extension and there is a chance he could be traded over Dion Waiters down the line and this comes as the deadline for an extension is the end of the month and heading into the season, the Cavs are also interested in signing Ray Allen and that could come around the All-Star break for some extra LeBron James support.
The Cavaliers over the summer were reportedly interested in Timofey Mozgov and some rumors had either Thompson or Waiters as options to move for the Cavs. The team likes both players, but they are really the best trade chips they have if they want to make a move and that could happen this season if the team wants to add some support for LeBron James. According to Pro Basketball Talk, the Cavs and Thompson have not talked about an extension before the deadline coming up and while that doesn't mean he will be traded, there is a good chance he will come up in rumors at the deadline.
Iman Shumpert and the Knicks are in the same boat and that could happen if the Cavaliers do not get off to the start they envisioned this season. James has said that winning will not come easy and that the team needs to adjust to each other, especially with James and Kevin Love coming in. The Cavaliers have a stacked team and they are the favorites to make it to the east finals with the Chicago Bulls and many see them as the NBA overall favorites with the Spurs.
Thompson is one of the top young prospects for the team and while the Cavs like what he brings to the table, they are not ready to pay him big money. Last season Thompson played in all 82 games and he will be in a reserve role more now that James is coming into things. Anderson Varejao has played with James a ton and Thompson's agent may try and work a deal or something down the line. The Cavaliers are also interested in Ray Allen and have been chasing him this offseason. Reports say that Allen will be coming back around the All-Star break and the Cavs are frontrunners.
The Kevin Love trade got done with the Cavaliers and that was huge for the Cavs and the Timberwolves, as names like Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennett were moved and that gave the Cavs the superstar they wanted. Love is a huge piece for the Cavaliers and now he comes in to play with James and he should be there for the long haul.
The Timberwolves and the Cavaliers were working on the deal for a while and it looked for a minute like it wouldn't happen, but the two sides eventually came to the agreement. Reports first had Minnesota and Cleveland agreeing on a handshake deal and after that the two sides put together the package. The Love trade is why many have picked the Cavs to go all the way and they likely will try and keep Love on an extension before free agency next summer.
