Washington Redskins Rumors: Robert Griffin III Replaced by Mark Sanchez, Brian Hoyer if Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota Not Drafted? Kirk Cousins, Colt McCoy Likely Out

When head coach Jay Gruden took over the Washington Redskins, a franchise quarterback was already in place. The team had sold the farm and more to acquire Robert Griffin III and intended to do everything in their power to make him successful. So far, that plan has failed and resulted in the benching of the quarterback in favor of third-string option Colt McCoy. If Griffin's time is up in Washington, where does the team turn for the quarterback position?

According NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport and ESPN's Adam Schefter, Griffin's time will be coming to an end in Washington. The former top pick will likely be traded or released at the end of the season after two years struggle that resulted in his benching. Since earning Offensive Rookie of the Year nods, Griffin has not looked like the same quarterback and the Redskins' record reflects it.

Many believed that Kirk Cousins was the successor to Griffin. There was excitement in the air with the second-string quarterback took over when Griffin suffered a dislocated ankle in the second week. Cousins looked to be the perfect fit to Gruden's offense and the Washington Post went as far to say the head coach actually favored the quarterback over Griffin. However, Cousins failed to meet the expectations, throwing more picks than touchdowns which has left the Redskins back at square one.

So who could be options for the team moving forward? According to NFLMocks.com, Mark Sanchez could be a solid option for Washington. Sanchez is currently exceling in his redemption tour with the Philadelphia Eagles. If the team does not retain him he could easily carry that on with the Redskins. Sanchez works better when he has an offensive minded coach, something he had at Southern California, but not in New York. Signing Sanchez would be a cheap acquire for Washington and also allow the team to draft a rookie to develop.

The Redskins could also try for someone like Ryan Mallett. The quarterback looked strong in his minimal showing with the Houston Texans before he suffered a torn pectoral muscle. He will be a free agent and another cheap signing for Washington. The Redskins will also aim for someone in the draft. They will not trade up for a quarterback which might leave them out of the running for Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota. However, Brett Hundley or Bryce Petty could be solid options for the team.
