The Washington Redskins are heading into the offseason with major questions at quarterback and an RG3 trade could be an option, as he has a contract decision coming and if the team opts to make a move, clubs like the Houston Texans, Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears and Tennessee Titans could be interested in trading for Robert Griffin III.
The Redskins have had a tough season in 2014 and they shuffled between Robert Griffin, Colt McCoy and Kirk Cousins and now Jay Gruden will have to make a major decision for the future. Gruden along with Dan Snyder and Bruce Allen have a contract option coming up for Griffin and that will cost upwards of $15 million and that could be a hefty price tag if he is the backup and not the starter. It is almost inconceivable to think that Griffin could be moved, as the Redskins gave up a huge package for him, but it appears that Gruden is not
According to the Washington Post, Gruden does not see Griffin as the long term option in Washington and thinks he is more of a project quarterback. Gruden is in a tough position, as he may be pitted against Snyder if he wants to get rid of Griffin, as Snyder has a close relationship with the quarterback. The Redskins could fire Gruden, but that would be the second head coach to go with Griffin as the quarterback.
Gruden has been frank about Griffin in numerous press conferences, including when he described all the things he did wrong in one of his starts after coming back from an injury. Gruden started Colt McCoy in place of Griffin against the Colts and the rams and later on he described that he has seen enough of Griffin on the field to know what "he can and cannot do." Some have speculated that this type of talk means that Gruden is finished with Griffin, but no decision will be made until after the season about his future.
Griffin and the Redskins just had a nightmare couple weeks when looking at things through the context of the original RG3 trade and draft class. The Redskins played the Colts a couple weeks ago and instead of Andrew Luck facing Griffin in a battle of one-two picks in the draft, it was McCoy under center. Luck lost to Griffin for rookie of the year in 2012 and both QBs brought their teams to the playoffs, but since then Luck has been trending into one of the best QBs in the league, while Griffin has been injured and has regressed.
Griffin had 3200 yards and 20 touchdowns with just five interceptions his rookie season and he also added over 800 rushing yards with another seven touchdowns. Griffin also completed nearly 70 percent of his passses his rookie season and looked like he would be the franchise QB for the future. Griffin may still serve that role, but right now things are up in the air and if a move is made, teams like the Houston Texans, Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, Buccaneers and Jets could be interested in the former Heisman winner.
