Cleveland Browns Rumors: Connor Shaw Starts Over Johnny Manziel, Brian Hoyer In Week 17 As Mike Pettine Looks To 2015

The Cleveland Browns will start Connor Shaw in Week 17 at quarterback with both Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer dealing with injuries and it comes after the undrafted rookie was promoted from the practice squad by head coach Mike Pettine, putting an end to Manziel at QB until 2015.

According to ESPN.com, Shaw will start in Week 17 against the Baltimore Ravens and it comes after the team also brought in Tyler Thigpen to be the backup on Sunday. Manziel is dealing with a hamstring injury and Hoyer has a shoulder issue, leaving Shaw as the last man standing. ESPN reports that Shaw now will be the 22nd quarterback to start for the Browns over the last 16 seasons.

Shaw was signed out of South Carolina after the draft and he was brought up from the practice squad to take over as the starter. Shaw can move like Manziel does in the pocket and outside and that could make things easier for offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan to call the game. Shaw played earlier this year in the preseason and went eight of nine for 123 yards and one touchdown in the matchup against the Washington Redskins.

The Browns come into Week 17 at 7-8 on the season and they are fourth in the AFC North heading into the matchup with Baltimore. Manziel got his chance to play towards the end of the season and he struggled for the Browns before coming down with a hamstring injury. The Browns are 21st in the league in passing yards per game this season, with Hoyer leading the team with 3326 yards passing.
