Olympic Results 2012 Women's Soccer Quarterfinals: USA Defeats New Zealand 2-0 Advancing to Semifinals

The USA soccer team, as expected, defeated New Zealand 2-0 in the quarterfinals. With the win, they advance to the semifinals and they will await an opponent.

With the score 0-0 in the first half, Abby Wambach scored a goal giving Team USA a 1-0 lead.

They held New Zealand scoreless throughout the match and then added another goal in the 87th minute scored by Sydney Leroux. It was the deciding goal in the match.

With the victory, Team USA also remains undefeated in the 2012 London Olympics.

They played a tough and physical match, taking control in all aspects of the game. The Women's U.S. soccer team took more shots on goal (7-5), 12 more shots in general than New Zealand, 6-0 in corner kicks and they controlled the ball for 53% of the match.

The U.S.'s possible opponets are Great Britain and Canada. This will be the last match to take place in the Women's Soccer Quarterfinals on Friday.

Great Britain is the hometown favorite and the team expected to win the match.

GB went undefeated in the first round of competition. They beat Brazil, New Zealand and Cameroon, claiming the top spot in the Group E pool.

From the looks of it, the winner of the gold medal could come out from this potential semifinals matchup.
