Group play in women's basketball is starting to wind down and China, France, Russia and the U.S. have all already guaranteed themselves spots in the quarterfinals.
The Americans continue their rounding into medal form with a matchup against the Czech Republic.
The ladies managed to fight off undefeated Turkey 89-58, so expect them to take down the Czech Republic team, which was previously beaten by Turkey.
Turkey shot 20% from the field in that second quarter and missed all three of the 3-point attempts they got before heading into halftime down by 15. They would threaten again in the third quarter, getting within five points after another pair of Vardali threes as well as an additional assisted three, but the U.S. just kept coming in waves of defensive intensity.
Head coach Geno Auriemma talked about his depth and praised McCoughtry's play on Wednesday:
"What we lack in preparation time we make up for in the quality of our depth," Auriemma said. "We have to use it to the best of our advantage. That second group led by Lindsay (Whalen) and Angel (McCoughtry) was the difference in the game.
"From the minute (McCoughtry) stepped on the floor to when the game ended she was the dominant player. That's something that I think we have that very few if any teams in this tournament have so I'm fortunate to have that option."
Team USA is tied for first place in Group A with a 3-0 record with China.
