The Big 12 conference is extremely competitive this season as a number of teams rank in the top 25 entering conference play. The Oklahoma Sooners and West Virginia Mountaineers are two of the teams surprising at this point in the year and now they prepare to face off on Tuesday.
The Sooners got started in Big 12 play in the right way, beating two Top 25 teams with double-digit wins over Baylor and Texas. However, that hot streak ended with an overtime loss to Kansas State that knocked them down to earn. Now, Oklahoma begins a four-game stretch with tough ranked matchups as they aim to avoid two straight losses.
Oklahoma is benefitting from improved play from Buddy Hield who had 31 points in the overtime game while shooting 40.5 percent. Guard Jordan Woodard struggled going just 4 for 25 in the last four games which is hurting the offense. The team had turnover issues against Kansas State, committing 13 while having just four assists. They lacked discipline and failed to show up like the team that beat two ranked opponents in two straight games. Oklahoma is riding their defense who is limiting opponents to just 28.0 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
West Virginia is also coming off a loss after starting Big 12 play hot. The team beat TCU and Texas Tech, but fell to Iowa State at home. They shot just 32.4 percent in that game which does not speak well as they prepare to face the tough Sooners defense. The Mountaineers are not shooting well from long ranger making just 7 of 29 against Iowa State. They are shooting 24.6 overall in Big 12 play. However, they did force the Cyclones to put up 18 turnovers while getting 24.7 points off them. If they can pair that with better shooting from beyond the arc, the Mountaineers have a better shot of getting a win against the Sooners.
