Premier League Transfer Rumors: Sunderland Sends Jozy Altidore To Toronto FC For Jermain Defoe

Sunderland of the English Premier League and Toronto FC are working on a swap with USMNT member Jozy Altidore and England striker Jermain Defoe and the transfer could become official this week after talks between the two sides, according to the BBC.

Altidore is one of the best known players in the United States and he will be heading back to his home league, as Toronto is set to acquire him. According to Pro Soccer Talk, TSN reports that Altidore is getting swapped for Defoe along with some cash and it comes after a long stretch of struggles for Altidore. Things have been getting talked over for weeks and now it looks like Altidore is heading to the MLS.

Altidore had 38 league goals during run with AZ Alkmaar before playing for Sunderland and now he is moving on after dealing with some struggles over the past year. The MLS now has American stars in Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley as well as Altidore and the deal will likely be announced later in the week. Defoe scored 11 goals in 19 league appearances for Toronto and now he is heading back to England.

The BBC reports that Black Cats manager Gus Poyet has been looking to add some attacking players this January and now he is doing that. Defoe comes in at 32 years old and he was training with Tottenham previously and he is 14th all-time in EPL goals according to the BBC.
