Italy's Men's Indoor Volleyball team advanced to the semifinals after defeating the USA in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. They played a challenging match, but walked out with the win in three sets 28-26, 25-20, 25-20.
Italy's players dominated the point charts. Cristian Savani led the team in scoring with 19 points. He had 14 spikes, 4 aces and 1 block. Ivan Zaytsev followed, adding 16 points with 15 spikes and 1 ace.
The U.S. team started this match on the attack. They scored the four out of the first five points in the match to take a 4-1 advantage. Italy tied a few times but never managed to take the lead in the early going.
USA consistently took control of the lead, until the game reached a 19-19 tie. Italy then scored consecutive points, taking the 21-19 advantage. They lead until the U.S. tied the set at 23 and then Italy came back to tie it at 26. Italy put the match away on a Dragan Travica serve to take the set 28-26.
The third set once again saw U.S. taking the early lead, but Italy did not fall behind, tying the game three times in the early going. With the game tied 4-4 they took their first lead of the set and kept taking the advantage whenever the U.S. team tied the score. They broke out to a 3-point lead making it a 9-6 game.
Team USA tied the match a few times, took the 16-15 lead. Italy went on a 4-0 run to take the lead they would never relinquish. They closed out the set on an ace by Savani.
The final set also began close, but Italy ran away with it after a 6-6 tie. They scored four straight points, taking a 10-6 lead. The lead was enough of a cushion as the U.S. never caught up to the Italians. Michal Lasko wrapped up the set and match with a spike as Stanley Clayton failed to block the attack.
The Italians will now face Brazil in the Semifinals
