When Ray Allen did not join a team in free agency this past offseason, many assumed the veteran was just waiting to sort through contending teams and would eventually re-sign by the All-Star break. Allen has never officially announced his retirement which makes a return very likely. However, the All-Star break has come and gone with the second-half of the season underway and yet Allen is nowhere to be seen and might not be for the rest of the year.
Several teams are ready to sign Allen if he announces a return, but NBA sources are reporting the guard will not play during this season. According to Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com, Allen will not be signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers this season and might not sign with a team at all. The Cavaliers were considered the frontrunners for Allen because LeBron James has been recruiting him since signing with the team in free agency. Cleveland also added former Miami Heat stars Mike Miller and James Jones to the roster that were also pushing for a South Beach reunion with Allen. However, the guard is not going to sign with Cleveland regardless.
Windhorst reported earlier in the season that Allen was down in Miami working out and staying in basketball shape in case he opted to come back for another year. James even went to visit him while rehabbing his sore knees. Most refused to believe the guard was thinking of retiring, but as he continues to sit out it is looking more likely that Allen has played his final days.
There is certainly still a chance that Allen could sign somewhere. The Atlanta Hawks have reportedly tried to stay in contact with his agent. The Eastern Conference leaders would be an excellent fit for Allen since they thrive on shooting from beyond the arc. The guard would fit in well with a rotation with Kyle Korver. The San Antonio Spurs have also been pushing a contract for the veteran to come play with Tim Duncan and Tony Parker. They would also be a solid fit.
For now, Allen is enjoying beach life in Miami. The Cleveland Cavaliers are no longer contenders for him and every other team might be out of the mix as well.
