Maurice Jones-Drew Rumors: New York Jets Should Go After Running Back

Is it anymore obvious that the New York Jets could use Maurice Jones-Drew's help in the back field?

The runningback Jones-Drew is currently holding out from joining his team in training camp and in the preseason. Most recently, he has declared he is willing to get traded after owner Shad Khan's comments to the public, which rubbed off wrongly on the star back.

Good time for the Jets to jump on the Jones-Drew sweepstakes?

Last season, they rushed for an average 90.5 yards a game, which was good for 23rd in the league. Bad enough that Mark Sanchez was ranked one of the worst quarterbacks in the league, it does not help if an average quarterback has a below average running game.

Not helping the cause either was the fact that the Jets ranked last in passing yards in 2011, averaging just 70.3 yards a game.

Jones-Drew can catch the ball, run the ball and provide protection for both Sanchez and Tim Tebow. The Jets' quarterbacks were sacked 35 times, which is not horrible, but with a strong back like Jones-Drew that number could surely decreased as long as the offensive line does its job.

Jones-Drew rushed for 1,606 yards last season to lead the NFL, also caught 347 yards and scored 3 TD's via the air.

The play action for the Jets could become deadly as they would keep teams off balance.

The question is of course, who, of value, do they have to trade for Jones-Drew?

The bigger question then becomes, how badly do you want to win now? The Jets did not acquire Tebow as a publicity stunt. They showed they want to work their way from being the team with the rowdy locker room and a guy like Tebow adds integrity to the team, but he also has a crave to win.

Adding Jones-Drew could give the team the much needed help on offense.
