Patriots Free Agency Rumors: Stevie Johnson, Greg Jennings Signed After Percy Harvin, Reggie Bush Out? Trent Richardson, Hakeem Nicks, Cecil Shorts Contract Options

The New England Patriots would like to add another offensive weapon to their already-impressive offense, but appear to be in no rush to do so. After getting linked to several big-named free agents, New England was content letting players like Percy Harvin and CJ Spiller sign elsewhere. With money left to spend on the open market, New England is eyeing a few affordable options to bring onto the team.

The Patriots continued to get linked to Harvin most of last week at the start of free agency. Bill Belichick has long been credited as a fan of Harvin since he entered the draft out of college. His release from the New York Jets appeared to open the door for a contract to the Patriots. However, Harvin ended up settling on a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills, leaving the Patriots to continue looking at their options.

According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, the Patriots are interested in Stevie Johnson who visited with the San Diego Chargers and will then head to New England. Johnson was released by the San Francisco 49ers and is currently looking for his third team in the last three years. Johnson was a disappointment in 2014, putting up just 435 yards and three touchdowns. However, the 28-year-old still has a lot left in him and pairing with a quarterback like Tom Brady could really help that effort. Johnson would also be a cheap contract to acquire.

If the Patriots miss out on signing Johnson, there are other receivers on the market that could sign a one-year deal if needed. Michael Crabtree, Hakeem Nicks and Cecil Shorts are the best options alongside Greg Jennings. All of those players could easily ink a two-year contract which would help the Patriots with both their salary cap and production on the field. The team did sign Scott Chandler to help with depth at the tight end position, but still need someone else.

The running back position continues to be an area of focus as well. The Patriots brought in Reggie Bush for a visit over the weekend, but ESPN announced the San Francisco 49ers won that contract. If the Patriots are still eyeing running backs on the open market, players like Knowshon Moreno, Trent Richardson are available. They would both be excellent change-of-pace backs from the bruising rushing style of LeGarrette Blount.
