US Open Tennis 2012 Results: Upsets By Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Sloane Stephens

The 2012 U.S. Open rankings having been flipped upside down by unexpected talent. Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez made a dramatic comeback against No. 10 Juan Monaco. American, 19-year-old, Sloane Stephens took out Francesca Schiavone in two straight sets.

If there was a precedent set for the excitement that took place in the Grandstand court, prior to the Garcia-Lopez vs. Monaco match, it was Jo-Wilfried Tsonga going into a tiebreaker against his opponent, Karol Beck.

Tsonga needed a few more games in order to put the Slovakian away and advance to the second round.

Monaco looked in complete control in his match against Garcia-Lopez. He took the first and second set 6-3,6-1.

When looking at the stats on paper, you would think that Monaco was the clear victor. Garcia-Lopez had 75 unforced errors compared to Monaco's 44. He also had 9 double faults compared to Monaco's five.

This match was really a theatrical performance. Garcia-Lopez, from Argentina, rallied back to win the third set 6-4.

Then took both the fourth and fifth sets 7(8)-6(6), 7(7), 6(3).

Sloane Stephens, the youngest contender at the U.S. Open cut through the dramatics and dominated her match against the 2010 French Open Champion, Francesca Schiavone of Italy.

Stephens had 13 less unforced errors and 15 more total points won.

She defeated Schiavone in two straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

Stephens will await a contender between Akgul Amanmuradova and Tatiana Malek.
