Andy Murray became the first British player to win a Grand Slam in 76 years, with his monumental five-set victory over Novak Djokovic in the final of the U.S. Open, and the Scot had a big admirer in one of football's legendary managers - Sir Alex Ferguson.
The Manchester United boss and James Bond Sean Connery had made a surprise visit to Murray's press conference after the tennis star's semi-final victory over Tomas Berdych. And now, Ferguson, who watched the tense finale at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, congratulated Murray on finally achieving his Grand Slam dream.
"I'm really proud for the boy after the hard work and his progress," Ferguson told BBC Sport. "He's really a top player and when he really needed to show it, he showed it.
"That was a real test of a champion for me. It was a privilege (to be at the match). I love tennis, I love watching tennis and to be involved tonight was a really special moment.
"It was more nerve wracking than a Premier League match. I'm usually in control of my own situation but I wasn't in control tonight."
Meanwhile, new signing Angelo Henriquez admitted he is looking to improve his game as quickly as possible in order to find a place in Ferguson's first-team plans. Henriquez was United's last summer signing, with Ferguson heaping praises on the striker.
The 18-year-old has built quite a reputation in his home country, scoring quite a few goals for Universidad de Chile, before United sprang and sealed the deal for the striker, before other clubs increased their interest.
Ferguson had hinted earlier that he would look to use the teenager in the Capital One Cup. "I'm training and looking to get an opportunity," Henriquez told Radio Bio Bio. "There are many things I have to improve to reach the level of Manchester United."
Hernandez added he was not disillusioned after being left out of United's Champions League squad. "I won't ask to be given some minutes and nor will I pretend I'm better than I really am," he said. "I have to go step by step. I have to adapt and improve physically."
