NBA News: Andrew Wiggins Wins Rookie of the Year Award For Minnesota Timberwolves

Minnesota Timberwolves guard Andrew Wiggins has won the Rookie of the Year award for the 2014-15 season after an impressive year following his trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers after being the number one overall pick in the NBA Draft.

Wiggins was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA draft and he was traded this summer in the Kevin Love deal. According to the Washington Post, Wiggins is the first Canadian player to win the award. This season Wiggins averaged 16 points, four rebounds and two assists per game and he finished strong while averaging 23.4 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists in his final 12 games.

Wiggins is just 20 years old and he averaged 39 minutes per game, something he would not have been able to do in Cleveland. Kent Youngblood of the Star Tribune first reported the news after speaking to a league source and also mentioned that Wiggins will be the first player from the Wolves to win the award. Philadelphia's Nerlens Noel, Chicago's Nikola Mirotic and Orlando's Elfrid Payton are considered to be the other major candidates for the award.

"I don't want to hear anybody saying there is anyone close to him," Timberwolves teammate and fellow rookie Zach LaVine said at the end of the season, according to ESPN. "He had the best rookie year by far."
