Triple Crown 2015: American Pharoah Wins Preakness After Winning Kentucky Derby With Belmont Stakes Next

American Pharoah won the Preakness Stakes on Saturday to keep the hope for a Triple Crown alive in 2015, as the Victor Espinoza ridden horse already won the Kentucky Derby and with the Belmont Stakes coming next, the pressure will be on the thoroughbred to complete the feat.

The number one post is usually a tough spot to win from at the Preakness, but American Pharoah was able to get it done. The thoroughbred horse won the 140th running of the Preakness on Saturday in a race that was very muddy for the field of horses and the win came in a time of 1:58.46. Owners Ahmed Zayat and trained by Bob Baffert now have the chance for the Triple Crown after also winning in Kentucky.

Last year California Chrome had the chance to win the Triple Crown and couldn't do it and now American Pharoah will make the attempt. The Belmont Stakes are on June 6 and that will be the chance for history to be made in Queens for American Pharoah. Pharoah won the Rebel Stakes and Arkansas Derby before winning the 2015 Kentucky Derby and 2015 Preakness Stakes.

Pharoah finished ahead of Dortmund and Firing Line, who were third and second at the Derby before coming in as the top competition for the Preakness. The rain was tough, but American Pharoah was able to pull it out. No horse has won the Triple Crown since 1978 when Affirmed did it and there have been 14 horses that have won the first two races. There has been some controversy recently, as some horses have sat out the middle race and then won the final race, helping to deny a Triple Crown.
