The Dallas Cowboys may add a running back this summer heading into the season and a trade with Adrian Peterson, Matt Forte, Lamar Miller or Tre Mason could be possible if Jerry Jones gives up a first round draft pick and this comes as the team could add a free agent like Chris Johnson, Ray Rice, Ben Tate, Felix Jones or Daniel Thomas.
The Cowboys let Demarco Murray go this offseason in free agency and brought in Darren McFadden after he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. Jones and head coach Jason Garrett have said that they are pleased with the makeup of the roster at the position, but there is a chance the team could add more for training camp. According to Pro Football Talk, the team has had workouts for Felix Jones, Ben Tate and Daniel Thomas, while Chris Johnson has offered up his services to the team as well.
Jones said to Fox Sports in an interview that he would not be opposed to trading a 2016 first round pick for a running back, but only if the right situation came up. While that does not mean the team will make a trade, they have been mentioned in connection with Adrian Peterson this offseason. Peterson is likely to be back with the Vikings, but according to Yahoo Sports, Peterson still "wants out" of Minnesota after being placed on the exempt list last season.
Jones said that the team would be willing to make a move because Tony Romo is getting to a certain age and also because the team got three first round talents in the draft process this year. Byron Jones was a first round pick and Randy Gregory came in as a first round talent but ended up going in the second round. Jones added La'el Collins as an undrafted free agent and he was considered to be a top prospect as well. That could make it a bit easier to give up a future first round pick to win games now.
SB Nation at Blogging the Boys and Mike Fisher at 103.5 the Fan looked at the trade speculation and put together some potential deals the Cowboys could look at. Matt Forte, Lamar Miller, Knile Davis, Peterson, Christine Michael and Doug Martin all could be potential targets if Jones wants to trade a first round pick. The team currently has Lance Dunbar, Joseph Randle and Ryan Williams on the roster along with McFadden and while that is a solid group, the Cowboys may want more to replace Murray.
The offensive line has become one of the best in football and that is a reason why the team allowed Murray to go. Forte could be a potential option, as the Chicago Tribune reports that he has stayed away from offseason workouts because he wants a contract extension. Forte is coming into the final year of his contract and so is Lamar Miller, who also has a fairly affordable salary heading into free agency. Both Miami and Chicago added RBs in the draft as well with Jay Ajayi and Jeremy Langford coming in and that could make those names available.
