EPL Transfer News: Steven Gerrard Asks Fans to Get Behind Team as Liverpool Look to Top Manchester United

Steven Gerrard knows all about the importance of a Liverpool vs Manchester United match, with the midfielder believing it to be the biggest game in the world.

While Liverpool have not had a great start this season, they have shown their potential in patches, and the England international believes a win against bitter rivals United could be the catalyst needed to kickstart their season.

"For me, it's the biggest (game) because the Premier League is the biggest league in the world and these are the two most successful clubs.

"I'm not being biased when I say that -- I think Liverpool vs Man U is the biggest game. Maybe Barca and Madrid is up there close to that, but for me it's still this one.

"It's a massive game -- we're looking for our first (league) win of the season and there would be no one better for us to start getting three points on the board. Hopefully then we can go on a run of winning games and move up the league because our start to the season has been inconsistent."

Gerrard wants the supporters at Anfield to give their side the extra edge in Sunday's game. "Make as much noise as you can and get behind us," he said when asked about sending a message to the fans.

"They're going to play a big part on Sunday. Hopefully the players can perform to our level and it can be a fantastic day that everyone can remember for the game and we can put a good show on for them."

The Liverpool captain knows Liverpool are not quite there yet with the big boys, but insisted there have been good signs and it was just a matter of finding consistency under new manager Brendan Rodgers. "I think we've been really close to that win," the 32-year-old said. "At West Brom, we weren't good enough and didn't deserve anything out of the game. The sending off was a big turning point.

"We were magnificent against Man City and should have won that game comfortably. At Sunderland it was the same and we should have had a win, so we should have six points on the board now.

"We didn't deserve anything against West Brom and Arsenal, so it's important that we try and find those three points as soon as possible and if you could pick one team in the league who you want to get that first win against, of course it would be United on Sunday.

"A win would give the team huge belief and confidence moving forward. I don't think this team is far away from clicking. We've shown signs we are a good team and it'll come sooner rather than later, that's what I believe."
