Just when you thought Liverpool's season could not get any worse, an already small squad was further reduced by the announcement that Martin Kelly will be out for a "considerable period of time", with Daniel Agger and Fabio Borini, one of only two strikers available to Liverpool, set to undergo further tests to determine the extent of their damage.
Kelly limped off the pitch near the end of the game against Manchester United, and the club now confirmed the defender had ruptured an ACL, needing a surgery, which is expected to keep him out for at least six months.
"Martin Kelly is likely to be out of action for a significant period of time after scans revealed he suffered an ACL rupture of his right knee during the match against Manchester United on Sunday," a statement on the club's official website said.
"The England international will now require ACL reconstruction."
Kelly confirmed the blow earlier on his Twitter account. "What I can say is its not the worst injury I've had, and for sure I'll be fighting for my place next year when I'm back fitter and stronger!"
Agger, who was carried off on a stretcher, before Robin Van Persie scored the winner from the penalty spot, has suffered a bone bruise, with the club confirming there was no ligament damage.
"Fellow defender Daniel Agger, who was stretchered off the pitch 13 minutes before Kelly limped out of action, has suffered a significant bone bruise to the left knee," the statement said.
"No ligament damage was sustained but further tests will be carried out before it can be established when he will be able to return to training."
Borini, who had to be taken off at half-time, has considerable swelling on his ankle. "Fabio Borini has considerable swelling to the inner aspect of his right ankle though no fracture was detected on the X-ray," the statement added.
"The club's medical staff will wait for the swelling to reduce before an MRI scan can take place tomorrow (Tuesday) to assess any soft tissue damage and determine when he may be able to return to playing."
