Manchester United Transfer News: Tom Cleverley Looking to Make His Mark This Season

Tom Cleverley is very highly regarded at both Manchester United and England, with many touting the playmaker to make his mark this season.

After a sound start to the new English Premier League campaign, Cleverley has found it a little hard to get game time, with Sir Alex Ferguson preferring other players and options in the center of the park. Cleverley, having started the first three matches for United, has failed to get off the bench in the next three.

But the midfielder is not too worried about it, knowing his chances will come eventually. The youngster is expected to be a part of United's starting XI for the Capital One Cup game against Newcastle United Wednesday.

"I'm always wanting to impress," the 23-year-old told the club's official website. "I want to impress the fans, impress the manager, impress my teammates and impress myself.

"I look on it as another chance to play and another chance to win a trophy. Every game United play I want to play."

Cleverley had a great start to the summer, being a part of the Great Britain team at the London Olympics, while he also won his first international caps for England, starting with a friendly against Italy.

"My season started with the Olympics, which was a great experience," he said. "Unfortunately we didn't get a medal but it was good for me to play those games and I was pleased with my form there.

"I managed to carry that form into the season with United and hopefully I've impressed the manager as well. I've also picked up three international caps, so it's been a great start.

"Things have been going really well but I just want them to get even better. I want to keep playing, keep winning and hopefully start scoring."

Goals is something that Cleverley has failed to produce in his senior United career so far. Playing a little deeper than he would prefer, the midfielder has found it hard to get into goalscoring positions. Shinji Kagawa is the undisputed advanced playmaker in the United side, and the Japanese has impressed everyone with his technical ability and vision.

Cleverley, however, is confident he can add goals to his repertoire, even if he plays a little deeper. "I feel like I've played a little deeper," he said. "I always watch the games back and I've noticed I've been intercepting and tackling a bit more than usual.

"I've been happy with that but that's not something that's going to affect my play. I just hope it's something I've added to my game.

"I know I've got a few goals in me. Hopefully my first arrives soon. If the midfield can chip in with 30 goals this season it will be a massive help to the team."
