Arsenal Transfer News: Gervinho, Gibbs Stress on the Importance of Win Against Olympiakos

Gervinho is quickly becoming quite the striker for Arsenal, after scoring yet another well-taken goal against Olympiakos in their Champions League Group B game at the Emirates.

The Ivorian is in a rich vein of form, also setting up Lukas Podolski for Arsenal's second strike, which eventually turned out to be the winner in their 3-1 victory, with Aaron Ramsey also getting on the scoresheet.

Arsenal were extremely poor in the first half, despite Gervinho scoring, and the 25-year-old admitted a better second half performance was the difference between the two teams, after Olympiakos threatened to pull off an improbable victory.

"It was a good result because we had to win this match and get to six points," the forward said. "We want to win every match and after the last match it was even more important.

"We could have finished with four points, but we want to give our all and show what we can do for Arsenal in every match.

"We had to improve because we knew they can play well and have very good movement. We had to improve from the first half because we were not at our best."

Kieran Gibbs, who put in another strong performance for the Gunners at left-back, said that little bit of "extra quality" in his team was the difference maker between the two sides. "No game in the Champions League is easy," he observed. "The extra quality in our squad came through in the end.

"The win is what it is all about. We know our qualities and we showed it in this game and the previous one. We had stages in both games where we were on the back foot but we soaked up that pressure and our individual quality made the difference.

"After a defeat at home (in Saturday's English Premier League game against Chelsea) the players wanted to shake off any doubt in our minds and we have certainly done that tonight.

"This is what we have to keep trying to do."

Olympiakos defender Jose Holebas rued his side's defensive mistakes in conceding both the goals. "The game was bad for us," he said. "We started very slowly in the first ten to 15 minutes.

"After that we came back into the game, but we conceded a very, very stupid goal. We had the ball and it deflected, then Gervinho shot between the legs and it was difficult to save the ball.

"The second goal was the same. The ball went through my legs and it was a stupid goal. That is the Champions League, one mistake and you concede.

"We have to go for three points against Montpellier. We have tried to go for three points in every game but we will have to change it and go for the win against Montpellier."
