The Gold Cup has the United States into the semifinals after the US won over Cuba on Saturday in Baltimore and the team took the game 6-0 after a hat trick from Clint Dempsey to keep their title defense alive and will play Jamaica in the semis next.
The United States won their group in the tournament with seven points and over the last couple of games the team has shown signs of better form after a slow start. Dempsey has been consistently scoring for the United States in the tournament and this game marked his first three-goal game in international play. Dempsey scored two goals in the first game for the United States in the tournament and he scored the first goal against Cuba.
Dempsey scored the first goal off of a cross by Timmy Chandler and the second goal came from Gyasi Zardes on a cross from Fabian Johnson. Aron Johansson scored the third goal of the match for the United States and that gave the team a 3-0 lead just 30 minutes into the match. The United States did not have any trouble getting to the net in this match and they went up 4-0 on a goal from Omar Gonzalez before halftime.
Dempsey scored his second goal of the game and the fifth of the tournament on a penalty in the second half and that came on a take down of Johansson. Dempsey finished off the hat trick with the sixth goal of the game on a shot from his outside foot. Jamaica beat Haiti 1-0 on Saturday night and they now will play against the United States in the semis. The team got a goal from Giles Barnes and that was all they needed to win.
