Tigers vs. Athletics Results: Oakland Wins, Comes From Behind, Defeat Detroit with 9th Inning Magic

The Oakland A's shifted the momentum of the series to their favor as they took Game 4 right from the hands of the Detroit Tigers and Jose Valverde.

Coco Crisp drove in Seth Smith from second base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth for the 4-3 win.

The Tigers trusted Valverde to end things, but he immediately gave up three consecutive hits for the tie.

Josh Reddick reached on a harmless base hit to right field. Josh Donaldson lined a double into left field. Reddick went to third and Donaldson was at second.

Smith looked incapable of catching up to a fastball from Papa Grande, but sent a frozen rope to centerfield, plating both runs to tie the game.

The Tigers had this one in their pockets.

Austin Jackson got it started for Detroit in the third inning. He drove iin catcher Alex Avila with a line drive single to left field. This gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Prince Fielder once again attempted to go deep against the A's and he made sure nobody took this one back into the field of play, sending an A.J. Griffin delivery way over the right field wall.

They tacked on another run late in the game from an unsual hero, Avisail Garcia, who singled to right field, scoring Omar Infante giving the Tigers a two-run cushion.

As always, Joaquin Benoit made it interesting in his eighth inning appearance. He gave up a hit to Stephen Drew and walked Yoenis Cespedes after retiring the first two batters in the inning.

He faced Brandon Moss with two runners on and retired hm on a change up in the dirt. The Oakland crowd went quiet, while Justin Verlander and the Tigers bounced around in the dugout.

The Tigers' starter, Max Scherzer went 5.1 with three hits, one unearned run, one walk and eight strikeouts.

The bullpen went the other 3.1 allowing just three runners to get on.

Octavio Dotel, the owner of a 2011 ring while relieving for the St. Louis Cardinals, finished off the sixth with a walk and a strikeout. Phil Coke retired the one batter he faced. Al Alburquerque pitched a perfect seventh and then you know who saved it in the ninth, Jose Valverde.

The A's pitching did a great job. Griffin went five innings allowing seven hits, two earned runs while walking none and striking out one batter. The bullpen kept them in the game, which allowed the A's to make this comeback.

Game 5 is tomorrow. Justin Verlander will have to win it for the Tigers if they are to advance. Jarrod Parker will take the mound for the A's as he attempts to get his club into the ALCS.
