Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers admitted he would look to strengthen the squad in the January transfer window after an injury to Fabio Borini meant an already thin forward line was depleted even further with Luis Suarez now the only recognized senior striker in the books.
Rodgers agreed to the loan move of Andy Carroll to West Ham, thinking he would be able to sign a replacement before the summer transfer window shut. However, that did not materialize, with the owners refusing to shell out too much money for Rodgers' preferred target Clint Dempsey.
Goals have been hard to come by in this Liverpool line-up, with last week's 0-0 draw against Stoke highlighting the need for a proven goalscorer. While Liverpool have started to play some eye-pleasing football, somebody to get on the end of the chances created is essential to continue the progress and turn the Reds into contenders for at least a Champions League place.
Rodgers said he had had a conversation with Liverpool's American owners, and is confident of getting in the needed reinforcement in January. "There are still areas we want to reinforce -- and we have to reinforce as soon as we can," Rodgers is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.
"Our best team are comparable to any team in the Premier League. But we're a very thin squad and we are having to challenge on a lot of fronts.
"I've had good conversations with the owners and they understand where we are at as a team."
Meanwhile, midfielder Lucas Leiva believes Liverpool are capable of challenging for the English Premier League title within the next five years.
"In five years I can see us achieving a lot of things," the Brazilian said.
"The last three or four years have been very difficult, it's a difficult moment, but we'll start to achieve.
"Why not? We have to have that dream (winning the league) in mind. Everyone here is working to do that one day. We know at the moment it's not possible.
"But if you see players like Suarez and Daniel Agger signing new deals and committing themselves to this club, it just shows how much these players believe.
"I don't think anybody would want to stay at a club they really don't believe can win anything, especially foreign players, because if you are so away from your house, your family, you want it to be a great career away.
"In five years, I just hope we can be winning the league and maybe the Champions League. Why not? We have to believe that. This club has already showed many people what we're capable of doing. Why can we not get back?"
