Indianapolis Colts News: Robert Mathis Return Coming In October For Defense?

Indianapolis Colt's defensive leader Robert Mathis will be returning to action later than previously thought. Mathis claimed early in the offseason that he would be ready for week 1 however the 34 year old linebacker has spent most of Colt's training camp on the active/PUP list.

Mathis is returning from an Achilles tear and most likely will never be the same. In an interview with the Indianapolis Star the linebacker made this statement in regards to attending training camp,

"It's go time," he said. "I took a year off. It's time to go."

Mathis is still thinking like his body is in his 20's however it needs more time to rehabilitate than before. The bad news for the Colts is that they have no real options; they just have to be patient with the veteran. Instead of focusing on picking up a premium linebacker in the draft they opted to pick up Phillip Dorsett with their first round pick. Dorsett will be a star wide receiver but then why don't you pick up a linebacker in free agency instead of picking up Andre Johnson. The loss of Mathis puts a hole in the Colt's linebacking core that they will try to bandage with Trent Cole but some youth on that defense is sorely needed.
