Cleveland Browns News and Rumors: Can Johnny Manziel Challenge Josh McCown To Start At QB With Strong Preseason?

There has been a lot of talk out of Browns training camp that Johnny Manziel can potentially be the starter for the Cleveland Browns.

Manziel has shown an impressive amount of growth since last season and is pretty much destined to take the reins of the Browns once again as a starting quarterback. Position coach Kevin O'Connell had this to say about Manziel's growth,

"From the day I came in, in the spring, and we finally got the players in the building, and from Day One in the building, in the classroom he's been phenomenal around Josh and the other quarterbacks and myself and John DeFilippo. As far as just digesting, whether it's install one to specific situational work to protection, he is doing everything on a daily basis that we're asking him, and then some, within the confines of the rules, and really just starting to flourish. He's just approaching every day as a pro and he's getting better and he's a talented guy."

On whether or not Manziel's growth can be linked to him mentally flipping a switch...

"No, I think it's just reps, his patience and his ability to trust his feet, we talk about that a lot. Trust his feet and his eyes and, with his physical arm talent to make throws, good things are going to happen, you see him getting through his progressions. We talk a lot about progressions and protections, and it's kind of something that's scattered a lot of different topics and there's a lot of little things you have to focus on in playing the quarterback position, but when you start getting comfortable with that, the game starts slowing down for guys."

Manziel missed some practice time dealing with elbow soreness but is a lock to start for a majority of the preseason. Manziel admitted even now he feels more relaxed on the football field. Manziel stated

"It's nice to come out here and wear any kind of shoes that I want and it's not the main story the next day. The hype is a little bit tempered and a little bit down, and that for me is a good thing, now I can just come out and play and do my game and really get to learn, because that's what I really needed to do is to learn. Off the field for me right now is just really simple. It's football right now, and it'll be that way throughout the rest of the season."
