The rumors continue to run about the Miami Marlins' interests in the former best player in baseball Alex Rodriguez. Though the idea might seem fair since the 14-time All-Star was raised in Florida, the Marlins should not even try to make the deal happen.
The Marlins were already playing to an empty stadium towards the latter stages of the season, adding A-Rod now will not make any sense.
They traded Hanley Ramirez and left a naked lineup with only Jose Reyes and Giancarlo Stanton to fend off their opponents. Yeah, A-Rod would probably be the third best hitter in the team and provide some type of protection for Stanton, but the last thing Floridians want to see is an old player on the decline in their team.
The Marlins went on to sign Reyes and Heath Bell over the offseason. Reyes did his thing, but Bell struggled, yet still got his cash despite losing the closer role. Both players combined will be owed $114 million in the remainder of their contracts while in Miami.
A-Rod is owed $114 million, but the Marlins will not have to worry about paying for this since the New York Yankees would likely absorb a large chunk of the money.
A-Rod may come cheap, but what's the use of having a 37-year-old, DH-dependent, injury prone player on your team?
He is not going to attract people and if he does, they will probably be disappointed to see that Rodriguez is not going to give them 30 home runs and 100 RBI.
Miami fans already had a hard time watching their team disintegrate at the end of the season. They already have Ozzie Guillen sucking in all the attention, the last thing they need is another media magnet.
For the sake of the clubhouse, the city and the fans, the Marlins have to stay away from this deal.
