The Boston Red Sox have brought in Dave Dombrowski as the new President of baseball operations following his departure from the Detroit Tigers and now general manager Ben Cherington will be out in Boston with the hiring of Dombrowski.
The Red Sox have had a tough season after making a number of significant moves in the offseason and they currently are out of the playoff race. According to Tim Britton of the Providence Journal, Dombrowski is taking over as president and Cherington will step down as general manager. Hardball Talk reports that Cherington was offered to continue the GM job under Dombrowski, but declined that.
Dombrowski likely will bring in his own GM and Bob Nightengale at USA Today reports that Frank Wren could be an option. Dombrowski was GM with the Tigers for over a decade and he previously was with the Marlins and the Expos, helping turn those teams around. Hardball Talk writes that Dombrowski previously worked under Red Sox owner John Henry when he was with the Marlins.
