NY Jets Rumors: Josh Johnson Option For Bryce Petty, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Flynn Backup, Geno Smith Returns Soon?

The NY Jets have Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Flynn and Bryce Petty stepping in with Geno Smith out with a broken jaw and the team could still look at adding another backup quarterback, as reports have Josh Johnson getting a workout from New York and other available names include Jason Campbell and Jake Waters.

The Jets already signed Matt Flynn this offseason, but Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reports that the team will also work out Josh Johnson. Johnson was previously released by the Bengals and now he could have interest from the Jets as well as the Browns. Garafolo writes that with Johnny Manziel dealing with an elbow issue, there's a chance that Cleveland could look at adding Johnson or another backup to the roster with Josh McCown, Connor Shaw and Thad Lewis there.

Johnson played in one preseason game this summer so far and he went 11-of-21 for 175 yards and also ran for 37 yards in the one game. Fitzpatrick and Bryce Petty have been working ahead of Flynn for now and with Fitzpatrick the starter, one competition to watch is Flynn and Petty. The Jets like Petty, but they did not expect him to be a main backup or contributing player this year. Obviously the team did not plan for IK Enemkpali to break Smith's jaw, so here they are now.

Head coach Todd Bowles was upset with how the situation played out between Smith and Enemkpali and now Smith is out with a broken jaw for a stretch. According to ESPN New York, Smith may not be out for that long, as the Jets likely are not going to be placing Smith on the IR with designation to return. Mike Maccagnan said that the team is "not likely" making that move, although he did say that it was possible depending on how Smith is recovering.

Fitzpatrick is going to get the first chance to start and there is a chance that the Jets could make a change if things do not go well. Smith also could get a chance to start again once he returns, but he likely will have to get out of Bowles' dog house first. Last season Smith played in 14 games and had 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

According to Peter Schrager of FOX Sports, Jason Campbell has been getting some attention on the free agent market and it comes as he was planning on retiring from the NFL. Schrager writes that Campbell has had at least "three teams" reach about him coming in and it's possible the Jets could be interested. The report says Campbell didn't thing those were the best fits and that he did not take deals because the "situations weren't right" for him.

Michael Vick and Rex Grossman just signed deals with the Steelers and Falcons, while Josh Freeman has stuck with the Dolphins through the summer. Those players are in the same group as someone like Johnson and he could be next to get a deal.
