When Brandon Jennings got injured last season, the Detroit Pistons acquired Reggie Jackson in a trade and in return saw the young point guard develop into a star. The Pistons repaid Jackson by giving him one of the biggest contracts in franchise history. However, now the question is what they intend on doing with Jennings who is working to get healthy and return as the starter he was once. While trade talk swirls around the point guard, he told the media he is fine with a backup job.
Jennings is aware there is brewing competition at the point guard spot for the Pistons when he returns to the court. He and Jackson are getting paid starter money, but Jennings is making it clear that he is willing to fill whatever role is given to him as he stays focused on getting healthy after tearing his Achilles tendon.
"Bringing in Reggie Jackson was smart. I'm supposed to be out, really, for nine months, and they need a point guard," Jennings said, via Matt Moore of CBSSports.com. "My main thing is just to get healthy. Hey, if I have to come off the bench and be the sixth man or whatever, I'm fine with that. Man, I just want to play basketball again. I just want to get back on the court and have fun."
If available, there would not be a short of interest in Jennings. While the Pistons are envisioning a two-headed monster backcourt, but if that fails to develop Jennings could be headed out sooner rather than later. With several teams facing doubt at the point guard spot, Jennings would be the ideal trade target. The New York Knicks are uncertain how the development of Langston Galloway and Jerian Grant will go while the Los Angeles Lakers are concerned over D'Angelo Russell and Jordan Clarkson.
Jennings is not the only big-named point guard that could potentially be on the market by the mid-season deadline. According to Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe, Ricky Rubio could be available if the Minnesota Timberwolves favor Tyus Jones in the future. The Knicks have been linked to a deal for Rubio if things do not go well with their current rotation. There is no guarantee that either Jennings or Rubio are moved any time soon, but if other teams feel the need to add talent then they will be the first names brought up in discussion.
