The Giants have announced that they have been dealt another damaging blow to their secondary.
Safety Nat Berhe who they thought to be the eventual starter will undergo surgery on his injured calf to remove a hardened blood clot.
This will potentially put Berhe out for the entire season; the Giants however could just put Berhe on short term injured reserve and see how he recovers. The Giants are in such a predicament with their safeties because they allowed Antrel Rolle and Stevie Brown, the two longtime staples of the Giant's secondary.
The Giants now have lost three safeties to season ending injuries, Bennett Jackson (torn ACL), Justin Currie (broken ankle) and their prized rookie Mykkele Thompson with a ruptured Achilles. This has been a string of terrible luck for the Giants as they now have to piece together a patchwork secondary with the newly signed Brandon Meriweather. Tom Coughlin was clearly not too pleased about the injury stating,
"He re-injured his calf, that's all I can tell you," the Giants coach said. "Whatever the mechanism, whatever goes on, he had one day of practice, felt really good, came out here and had the same occurrence that happened the last time. So he is re-injured."
The Giants do not have a lot of time to find some decent depth at the safety position, they face off with the Dallas Cowboys in the regular season opener.
