Gilbert Arenas To Play Overseas In China, Will Join The Guangdong Southern Tigers

Gilbert Arenas will be yet another former NBA All-Star to continue his basketball career in China, according to sources close to Arenas.

In 11 NBA seasons, Arenas averaged 20.7 points, with a seasonal high of 29.3 points per game for Washington in 2005-06. Yet he's been trying to resurrect his career ever since the infamous gunplay episode in the Wizards' locker room in December 2009 that ultimately led to a 30-day jail sentence and a December 2010 trade to the Orlando Magic that didn't pan out, prompting Orlando to waive Arenas via the league's amnesty clause on Dec. 9, 2011.

Arenas, who's been looking for a team to sign with this off-season, is on the verge of signing a one-year deal with the Guangdong Southern Tigers.

Sources say Arenas also had negotiations with the Yao Ming-owned Shanghai Sharks before agreeing to sign with Guangdong.

Arenas, 30, spent the bulk of the offseason working out under longtime NBA trainer Joe Abunassar, all while making occasional appearances at the Lakers' and Clippers' practice facilities in Los Angeles for pickup games.

After playing just 17 games last season for the Memphis Grizzlies, Arenas turned his attention on playing in China or had hopes of finding place on either the Lakers' or Clippers' rosters. His decision to play in China is a result of neither one of the L.A. franchises expressing much interest in signing the veteran guard.
