Packers Rumors: Davante Adams, Ty Montgomery Starters, Jarrett Boykin Pickup Option After Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb Injuries?

The Green Bay Packers have Jordy Nelson out for the season and with Randall Cobb banged up, the team could look at picking up Jarrett Boykin after his release from the Carolina Panthers, as he was previously with the Packers last season. Davante Adams, Ty Montgomery and Jeff Janis may have to step up to start for Aaron Rodgers if Cobb can't go in Week 1 of the season.

The Packers suffered a big loss with Jordy Nelson tearing an ACL, he was the leading receiver for the team last season and set a franchise record in receiving yards. Nelson is out for the season and over the weekend the team had a scare with Cobb, who suffered a shoulder injury. According to NFL.com, the injury to Cobb is not considered serious and while there is a chance he could miss Week 1 of the season, he also could heal up in time to play.

UPDATE: Randall Cobb is expected to be ready for Week 1.

NFL.com reports that the injury is an AC join sprain in Cobb's shoulder and the injury is "considered minor." The Packers have Davante Adams as the next man up on the depth chart and he is there with Ty Montgomery, Jeff Janis and Myles White for the team. Adams was expected to be a breakout player this season with Cobb and Nelson healthy, so he should be in line for a big season no matter what happens with Cobb.

The Packers could consider making some additions after the injuries, as roster cuts are happening and more players will be available in the coming weeks. ESPN reported that James Jones, who was with the Packers and signed with the Giants as a free agent last month, could be a fit if he is released by the Giants. According to Black and Blue Review, former Packers wideout Jarrett Boykin was released by the Panthers and he also could be an option.

Denarius Moore, Kenbrell Thompkins and Wes Welker are on the market and also could be potential fits for the Packers. Boykin previously played with the Packers for three seasons and he had just three catches last year in 13 games. Boykin showed some potential in 2013 when Cobb went down with an injury, as he had a career best 49 catches for 681 yards and three touchdowns while stepping in. The Packers may sit tight and hope Cobb can come back healthy, but there are some options on the market now with Denarius Moore also getting cut.

The Packers are not a team that usually makes trades when injuries happen, so they could wait out until James Jones does or does not get cut to make a move. Cobb is expected to be okay and if he misses time, it could be only one game. ESPN reports that Cobb's "test results gave the Packers hope" that he will be on the field for the first game against the Bears. Cobb will be out for the final preseason game on Thursday for the Packers, but there is a chance he could be active Week 1.
