2015 US Open Results and News: Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic Advance To Second Round At Tennis Major

The US Open is moving through the first round and players like Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Mardy Fish, Venus Williams, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Milos Raonic are through into the second round this week as the major continues in Flushing. Players like Roger Federer and Andy Murray are in action on Tuesday.

Serena Williams made quick work in the first round, going up 5-0 fast in the first set before Vitalia Diatchenko retired in the second set. Williams sped through the first five games, winning those in just 12 minutes and eventually Diatchenko needed the trainer and then the match ended. The match started off Williams's quest to win the calendar Grand Slam and it comes as she is defending her US Open title here from last year.

Rafael Nadal looked strong in his debut at the Open, taking down Borna Coric with a score of 6-3, 6-2. 4-6, 6-4 in the match. Coric is just 18 and he showed some great potential, Nadal was strong as well and he did not show many signs of being out of sorts after the up and down year he has had. Nadal is the eighth seed in the tournament and he was able to make it through. Nadal missed defending his title last year and now he will get the chance to try and make it now.

Novak Djokovic was able to get through on straight sets and Kei Nishikori, who was a finalist last year, lost in the first round. Nishikori lost to Benoit Paire 6-4 3-6 4-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 in a tough match and now he is out of the mix already. Ana Ivanovic was upset along with Heather Watson, while Venus Williams was able to win to advance. Djokovic won with ease with the score of 6-1 6-1 6-1 against Brazil's Joao Souza and now he is into the next round.

Williams is coming in looking to take the slam and some top players have already fallen and it comes after Maria Sharapova pulled out with an injury. Serena is now through along with Venus, who won against Monica Puig in three sets.
