Manchester United Transfer News: Ferguson Insists He Has No Problems with Rio Ferdinand as Club Gets Ready to Offer Veteran New Contract

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson insisted he had no problems with Rio Ferdinand after the veteran defender failed to wear the Kick It Out T-shirt prior to Saturday's English Premier League game against Stoke City.

Ferguson also said his decision to leave the 33-year-old out of the Champions League fixture against Braga was not an immediate result of the controversy.

The United manager had mentioned prior to the game on Friday that all his players would put on the anti-racism program's T-shirt, but was left disappointed when Ferdinand refused to wear one.

Sir Alex was unhappy with the fact that Ferdinand did not come to him and let him know about the fact that he would not be wearing the T-shirt.

"The issue's quite simple," Ferguson said. "I've spoken to Rio. I think there was a communication problem. He felt I should have spoken to him on Friday and I obviously didn't anticipate that he'd have a problem wearing the shirt.

"My advice to him was that I always feel a union is stronger than an individual. It's important he airs his grievances to the right people, to the PFA or the FA. It's been a communication problem rather than anything else.

"As the manager of a club you lay down policy and you don't want to see it ignored. That's where my anger came from on Saturday. But we've resolved the situation, there's no lingering problems and we move on. That's the end of the matter."

United are reportedly ready to offer Ferdinand a one-year deal to keep him at Old Trafford after the end of the current season.

However, according to Goal.com, the club will only offer the veteran around half of the current £120,000 a week ($192,000) salary, meaning Ferdinand will have to take a massive pay cut if he is to extend his stay with United past 11 years.

Meanwhile, Ferguson gave an update on the current injury progress of central defenders Chris Smalling and Phil Jones. "Chris Smalling trained this morning with Warren Joyce's Reserves," Ferguson said.

"He's trained with them for a couple of days. It's non-contact for him at the moment -- he's just playing as a free player, a floating player, in the training sessions. The encouraging thing is that he's on the road back. There's no question about that.

"I expect Phil Jones to start on the football side of things on Monday. They're both around two or three weeks away, which is good news. They're not far away."
