NY Yankees News: Mark Teixeira Out For Regular Season With Leg Fracture, Playoffs Return Not Likely? Greg Bird Replacement

The Yankees have Mark Teixeira out for the rest of the regular season after the first baseman suffered a fracture in his leg. Hardball Talk reports that Teixeira likely will not return for the playoffs, but he will definitely be out of action for the rest of September after having another MRI test on his leg.

Teixeira has had a resurgent season after some disappointing numbers over the last few years and he is one of the main reasons why the Yankees are in playoff contention. According to Jack Curry of YES, Teixeira is officially ruled out for the rest of the regular season and there is a chance that he could also miss the playoffs. The MRI revealed a fracture in his leg and it could take three months to heal.

Teixeira has been trying to recover and rest to get his legs back to full strength, but things have not been healing up as the first baseman would have liked and now he is likely done for 2015. Teixeira has played in 111 games this season and put up a .255 average with 31 home runs and 79 RBI for the Yankees. The team has Greg Bird on the roster after calling him up earlier in the year and he likely will take over as the main first baseman with Teixeira down.

Bird, Chase Headley and also Alex Rodriguez could see time at first base over the next few weeks, but expect Bird to play the majority of the games at the position. Teixeira has not played since August while dealing with the shin injury and his return for the postseason is firmly in question if the Yankees make it. The team likely will need to prepare to play without Teixeira moving forward.

Teixeira was quoted as saying "my leg doesn't really work" when asked about his recovery earlier in the week and the tests showed the fracture soon after.
