Clemson has been one of the most prolific offenses in the nation this season, scoring over 40 points per game on the way to a 6-1 record.
The team has played tough in the ACC this season as well and on Thursday night Clemson will match up Wake Forest on the road with a chance to take a share of first place in the division.
The Tigers sit one game behind Florida State in the Atlantic division and according to ESPN.com, "Clemson has won five of the past six games in this series, but beat the Deacs by only a field goal last season."
The offense has carried Clemson this season behind the stellar play of quarterback Tahj Boyd, who hasd passed for over 1,900 yards and 15 touchdowns with just six interceptions. The team is ranked 15th in the nation in scoring offense and is in the top 40 in both passing and rushing yards.
The offense has racked up an average of nearly 430 yards per game, and according to ESPN, the team has scored at least 37 points in the past six games.
Although the offense has been the most productive unit, the Clemson defense has improved in recent weeks and was essential in last Saturday's 38-17 victory over Virginia Tech. Safety Jonathan Meeks had two of the four turnovers by the Clemson defense, including a 74-yard interception return for a touchdown.
"We have been growing up as a defense as a whole," Meeks said to the Associated Press. "(The offense) had our back all season. We had their backs today. It is a team win. It is a quick turnaround to next Thursday, so we have to put this one behind us right now and turn it over to Wake Forest."
Against Virginia, Boyd had only 160 yards through the air, but scored two rushing touchdowns. The team was outgained by the Cavaliers with only 295 yards, but produced a number of big plays to earn the win.
The defense is giving up over 430 yards per game this season, the first under coordinator Brent Venables. The team brought him in after a tough 70-33 loss last year against West Virginia.
"You got to go do it again and do it again, that's what the season's about," Venables said. "The funnest times I've had as a coach is when I've seen great improvement from the beginning of the year until the end."
Wake Forest has been struggling this season offensively and has lost three of the past four games against Clemson. The Demon Deacons are ranked 101st in rushing yards and 97th in passing with just 195 yards per game.
Last Saturday the team pulled out a close game 16-10 against Virginia to end a three-game conference losing streak. Wake Forest was able to overcome the lowest offensive output in an ACC victory for the team in over 40 years.
"I guess this is resilience," defensive back Chibulkem Okoro said. "And that's what we have to be: resilient. Now we want to ride this momentum and keep it going."
The defense was key in the victory, forcing three turnovers and giving up only 48 rushing yards to the Cavaliers.
Quarterback Tanner Price has been solid but not stellar this season, throwing for 1,327 yards and seven touchdowns. In last year's game against Clemson, Price passed for 172 yards and touchdown.
Wake Forest is 2-3 in the ACC this season and has a chance to pull back to .500 in the conference with a win on Saturday. Next week Clemson has a tough showdown with Duke, the Coastal division first place team, while Wake Forest has a match up against last place Boston College.
