Brendan Rodgers will be keen to get his Liverpool side back on course after suffering an ignominious exit from the League Cup that they were defending, but things won't get any easier when Newcastle visit Anfield in the English Premier League on Sunday.
Liverpool were extremely poor against Swansea in the Capital One Cup and the manager will bring back his first-teamers in a bid to find their feet in the Premier League, which they are still struggling to do.
"There are certainly no regrets about coming here," Rodgers said. "It was always going to be a massive job. I signed a three-year deal but that process of rebuilding will go beyond that. Hopefully I can be here to do that.
"There is no quick fix here. We have to balance the finances and that is what we are doing. There will be a bit of pain on the way.
Rodgers added: "I came here for the challenge of getting the club to the top because that's what you want to do as a manager. That's easier said than done and there are two ways you go about that. You either invest enormously in getting the best players in or, if you can't do that, you have to build and cultivate and grow your own."
Pepe Reina and Glen Johnson remain doubts with hamstring injuries, with the duo set to be assessed a few hours before Sunday's game.
For Newcastle, Demba Ba is expected to recover from a calf problem, but Cheick Tiote will serve the second of his three-match suspension incurred from the sending off in the Sunderland game.
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew expects the match to be a "cracking" one. "It's good for British football if Liverpool have a strong side, like Newcastle," Pardew said. "I think we are two clubs who are very similar at the minute - both striving to be a top-six team.
"It is two hard-working cities, working-class clubs and the supporters want passion and spirit on the pitch as much as the fluent football that they've been used to over the years.
"That's the pressure myself and Brendan have to bear, to make sure our teams are competitive and that we play the game in the right manner.
"If I'm honest, I think there's a little bit more pressure at Liverpool because of the stature and the trophies they've won.
"You have to look at Newcastle and say we haven't won a trophy for so long. So historically you would have to put them much higher than us.
"But at the moment I think we are pretty even. It will be two very good sides (on Sunday) and it will be a cracking game."
