Chelsea vs Shakhtar Donetsk: Preview, Team News, Injuries, Predictions and Expected Lineups

Defending European champions Chelsea will look to avenge their defeat at the hands of Shakhtar Donetsk when the Ukrainian side visit Stamford Bridge in the reverse Group E fixture of the Champions League.

The Blues were shocked 2-1 by a bright Shakhtar side in the last game, with Roberto Di Matteo vowing to make things right when the two teams returned to face each other. Shakhtar are sitting pretty with seven points from three matches, while Chelsea are second, three points behind the leaders.

A win will take the Blues right up there with Shakhtar, while also quelling the challenge of Juventus, who take on Nordsjaelland, to a certain extent. Juve have three points from three games, while the Danish side are bottom with one point.

Chelsea, like so many of the English sides this season, have looked far from convincing in the Champions League, first throwing away a two-goal lead against Juventus, before eking out a win at Nordjaelland.

Di Matteo's side were deservedly beaten by Shakhtar in Ukraine, and Chelsea will know another poor performance might just spell the end of their title defense.

"I think there are some comparisons to last season, when we had must-win games," Di Matteo said. "Fortunately we have players that have experience and have been there before. I think we need to play a perfect game to be able to win against Shakhtar because they are a good side.

"But we are strong at home -- we've shown that over many, many years and I think we'll be fired up for this game.

"We need to be at our best. The way they went to Turin and played there showed what type of confidence they have. But we are a very good team and I think we need to show that -- put them under pressure and try to score the goals that we need to win the game.

"Every player that is on the pitch needs to be able to perform at the highest of their ability. In Donetsk, the early goal helped them massively -- it allowed them to play on the counterattack rather than breaking us down.

"So I think it's important that we start well and get the crowd behind us and draw confidence from a good start."

The home side will be boosted by the return of John Terry, who has been serving a four-match domestic suspension, but Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard have been ruled out. Juan Mata will be assessed a few hours before the match, after missing Saturday's 0-0 Premier League draw against Swansea. David Luiz also remains a doubt with an ankle problem.

Mata, Eden Hazard and Oscar have been three of Chelsea's best players this season, with everything that is good about the team going forward, coming through them; therefore the availability of the Spaniard will be paramount to the home side. Di Matteo, however, will also be concerned by the form of Fernando Torres, who looks woefully short of confidence.

Shakhtar, however, are looking a confident team after another comfortable victory in the Ukrainian League, and have no real injury worries going into the Champions League game.

Expected lineups: Chelsea: Cech; Bertrand, Terry, Cahill, Ivanovic; Mikel, Ramires; Mata, Hazard, Oscar; Torres.

Shakhtar: Kanibolotskiy; Srna, Rakitskiy, Kucher, Rat; Stepanenko, Fernandinho, Dentinho, Costa, Willian 60; Teixeira 60.

Prediction: 2-1 to Chelsea
