New York Mets Trade Rumors: R.A. Dickey Likely Dealt Away for Outfielder or Catcher? Commentary

The New York Mets are in the rumor mill and the buzz is that they are willing to consider trading knuckleballer R.A. Dickey rather than extending his contract.

Ken Rosenthal of Foxsports.com foresees the Mets using the "Greedy Ballplayer" theory as an excuse to avoid extending Dickey. He is 38-years-old and obviously wants to get paid, but the Mets have not sat down with the right hander to discuss his future with the organization.

Another baseball insider, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, believes the Mets are willing to trade R.A. Dickey for a catcher, a position the team has not been able to fill since the departure of Paul Lo Duca.

The Mets have potential pitching depth as Zach Wheeler is still preparing himself in the minors and Matt Harvey already introduced himself to the majors.

So trading Dickey wouldn't be so horrible, but let's face it, who else are the Mets' fans going to come to the stadium to watch?

Dickey was one of the greatest stories in Major League Baseball in 2012 and simply getting rid of him without discussing a deal wouldn't be the right thing to do.

Dickey was the ace of the staff and is currently in consideration for the Cy Young Award. In 2012 he went 20-6 with a 2.73 ERA, five complete games, three shutouts in 233.2 innings pitched and recorded 230 strikeouts.

Rosenthal is pleading the Mets to at least offer Dickey a deal before making the trade, that way fans won't pin this on the wrong party.

Executives believe trading Dickey is the right move and I agree with them since the Mets will be unloading contracts after this season, therefore giving them the chance to acquire younger free agents, but at least offer the knuckleballer a deal without tarnishing his image.
