Chelsea Transfer News: John Terry Will Miss A Few Weeks With Knee Injury, MRI Shows No Serious Damage

Chelsea captain John Terry was injured in Sunday's match at Stamford Bridge against Liverpool, but will avoid a lengthy absence after tests showed "no significant damage."

Terry had an MRI on Monday that revealed the severity of the injury following the Barclays Premier League draw with Liverpool.

Chelsea released a statement on their official Twitter feed: "MRI Scans reveal no significant damage to John Terry's cruciate ligaments. He will be out weeks rather than months."

Terry was returning to Chelsea after a four-match ban for making racist comments to another player last year. The team suffered without him, including in a 3-2 loss against Manchester United, as the Blues fell to third in the standings.

"Chelsea Football Club's medical team will conduct further tests over the next two or three days once the swelling has subsided to determine how long John will be out, but it will be a matter of weeks not months," Chelsea said in a statement, according to ESPN.com.

Following the match against Liverpool, Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo commented on the injury and how important Terry is to the club.

"We will have to wait for a scan tomorrow to understand the full extent of the injury." Di Matteo said. "We have just got John back after the ban and it was great seeing him lead the team out.

Terry scored the lone goal for the Blues in the match on a header off of a corner kick from Juan Mata. It was the 50th of Terry's career with Chelsea.

The 31-year-old defender was injured after accidentally colliding with Liverpool's Luis Suarez, who eventually scored the match tying goal later on.

"I was concerned about his well-being," Di Matteo said. "We just got him back into the team after the ban. It was great seeing him out there."

Suarez fell onto Terry's right leg after trying to avoid a tackle. He remained on the pitch for several minutes and looked to be in a great deal of pain before being taken off on a stretcher.

"He started the game very well and showed exactly his qualities, experience and influence on the team, and it was a real shame he had to go off because he was having a very good game," said Di Matteo.

Following the draw, Chelsea is in third place in the league standings, only three points behind Manchester United.

"We managed to play games without him and we have players who will have a chance to impress," said Chelsea's Petr Cech.

The injury could force Terry to miss important matches, including a Champions League game at Juventus and Premier League matches against West Brom and Manchester City.

"I have confidence. Obviously, it's a pity we will lose him again but we have a large squad and quality defenders to deal with that," said Cech. "It's important to have people who can step up. This is a chance for the others to shine and we are going to deal with his loss for him."

Terry was returning to Chelsea after missing four games due to his ban for making racists comments. He went through a criminal case due to the incident and later was fined and suspended following an investigation by the FA Regulatory Commission.

Terry was fined £220,000 ($356,356) following a four-day disciplinary hearing for his actions against Rangers' defender Anton Ferdinand in a game last season.

"Although I'm disappointed with the FA judgment, I accept that the language I used, regardless of the context, is not acceptable on the football field or indeed in any walk of life," Terry said at the time.

Chelsea won that match 1-0, but immediately after the game, footage appeared that showed Terry get up close with Ferdinand and revealed his verbal remarks.
