2012 AL MVP Winner Rumors: Could Mike Trout Upset Miguel Cabrera? (Commentary)

Little do we know that we could be once again on the verge of history repeating itself as the MVP race comes down to the wire and will be announced at around 6 p.m. ET this evening.

No, no, no. We're not referring to an actual historic feat like Miguel Cabrera winning the Triple Crown.

That's old news.

What could happen, however, is that the Triple Crown winner might not get the MVP trophy since Mike Trout had a more productive year.

It doesn't make sense, how could the Triple Crown winner not win the MVP award especially after making his team relevant in the final weeks when it mattered and helping them take first place?

Well, as Joe Ponanski of Sports on Earth reminds us, Ted Williams destroyed major league pitching back in 1942, won the Triple Crown, but was not named the MVP of the season. Joe Gordon won the MVP that year.

He hit .322 with 18 homers and 103 RBI. Williams on the other hand had twice as many home runs as Gordon with 36, drove in 137 runs and hit .356. In the end, writers pointed out that Gordon was better for the game since Williams was more about his own individual accomplishments and, also, it came down to overall performance.

Not the Cabrera is being accused of selfishness about stats, but Trout simply had a remarkable year at the plate, on the base pads on the field. You name it and Trout can fill up power, speed and defensive categories. Just by looking at Cabrera's physique we know he will not impress us on the base pads.

So when looking at the picture, to its entirety, Trout makes an impressive run for the case of winning the MVP.

You can check out Ponanski's in-depth analysis including advanced stats that favor Trout winning the award.

If there is any good news for Cabrera and Trout is that both of those men we mentioned above are in the Hall of Fame.
