Manchester United Manager Sir Alex Ferguson Expresses Pride After Bronze Statue is Unveiled at Old Trafford

Sir Alex Ferguson expressed his pride after a statue of the Manchester United manager was unveiled amid much fanfare at Old Trafford.

Ferguson, easily United's most successful manager, was given a round of tributes to mark his 26 years in charge, while his wife Lady Cathy revealed the bronze structure.

The ceremony was attended by several big-name players of yesteryear, including Eric Cantona, Dwight Yorke, Rud Van Nistelorooy, Peter Schmeichel and Edwin Van Der Saar, with over 2,500 United fans also braving the wet Manchester weather to be a part of the momentous day.

"It's a really proud moment for me," Ferguson said. "Normally people die before they have a statue. I'm outliving death!

"I've had an incredible journey at the club and I've had so many great players, some of whom are here today.

"They should build this statue for them all, because they've been absolutely marvellous. From 1986 right through to today, the players have given us enormous pleasure.

"Everyone has had a part to play, from the players to the coaching staff, medical staff and, of course, the fans.

"The boss (his wife Lady Cathy) is a fantastic person. Someone has to control me and she's the only one who can. She has promised that every Saturday morning she's going to come down and bow to the statue."

Former United striker Van Nistelrooy also paid tribute to the manager. The Dutchman left the club under a cloud in 2006, after enjoying a highly successful spell, where he scored 150 goals in just 219 appearances. Van Nistelrooy, however, has made his peace with Ferguson and was glowing in his tribute for the Scot.

"It's great to be back, especially as it is to pay respect to the manager, who deserves all the credit for today," said Van Nistelrooy, who was meeting Ferguson for the first time face-to-face after his acrimonious departure. "He's the reason we are here.

"I have a great five years and I want to pay my respects. I'm very grateful for the chances Sir Alex gave me.

"What stood out for me was Gary Neville's comment (in the ceremony's video tribute). He's able to get the best out of people. He did that with me as well. Not just on the pitch but off it he gave me a lot, which I am very grateful for.

"Of course, we had our things with the way it ended at the club. But overall I look back on a great time here with a lot of respect for him."
