RG3 Rumors and Targets: Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans Options If RGIII Cut By Washington Redskins?

The Washington Redskins are expected to cut Robert Griffin III this offseason and if that happens, the quarterback could be a target for the Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Eagles and San Francisco 49ers.

Griffin's future with the Redskins has been up in the air since the team picked up his $16.155 million fifth year option and reports have Griffin's time in Washington all but done at this point. Kirk Cousins was pushed as the starter for Jay Gruden this season and with Griffin inactive for most of the year on the roster, his release is looking more and more likely. According to NFL.com, Ian Rapoport reports that Griffin will be cut by the Redskins before the team has to pay his option for next season.

Rapoport reported earlier in the January that it was owner Daniel Snyder who wanted Griffin to remain on the roster this season despite not playing behind Cousins. Griffin's future in Washington looks all but over at this point and if Griffin is released, there could be a number of teams interested in signing him. Griffin likely will either end up as a backup quarterback or will be given the chance to compete to start, as he has not proven that he can be a consistent starter in the NFL over the past couple years.

Griffin was electric in 2012 when he won rookie of the year and led the Redskins to the playoffs, but since that time RG3 has dealt with injuries and inconsistency that derailed his development in Washington. Earlier in the season NFL.com reported that the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles likely would be interested in Griffin if he ends up on the free agent market. The Eagles have changed coaches since that time from Chip Kelly to Doug Pederson, but if Sam Bradford leaves in free agency, Pederson could consider Griffin as an option.

The Texans are reportedly in the market for another quarterback to add some competition with Brian Hoyer and Griffin could be a potential fit. The Dallas Cowboys want an upgrade behind Tony Romo and someone to develop for the future and Griffin could fit that bill if he ends up in Dallas. Charles Robinson at Yahoo Sports reports that Griffin would "love" to end up in Dallas, as his family loves the Cowboys and he is a native Texan. That also could make Houston a desirable destination for Griffin.

The Cleveland Browns are another spot where Griffin could land, as new head coach Hue Jackson has already made some comments about bringing in another quarterback for Johnny Manziel. Griffin still is young and will be just 26 when next season starts and that means he still has the potential to develop into a solid NFL quarterback. Griffin may not be as explosive as he was a couple years ago after dealing with knee injuries, but he still could be an upgrade for a number of teams around the league.
