The San Francisco 49ers continue to add more pieces to this coaching staff as they have brought in former Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil.
O'Neil will replace Eric Mangini who was a part of former 49er's head coach Jim Tomsula's staff. This may be a decision that the 49ers regret as the last 2 seasons for O'Neil and the Browns have not been great, the Browns have ranked 27th and 23rd on defense between 2014 and 2015. So this is not exactly a guy that should be brought in to help rebuild a defense especially one that is ranked 29th in 2015 that is missing so many key pieces.
The 49ers originally offered the job to Houston Texans linebackers coach, Mike Vrabel, however he turned it down to remain with his team. The 49ers also hired a new head coach in Chip Kelly recently; it will be interesting to see how these two coaches interact with one another.
The 49ers are anemic on both offense and defense so it is likely to take several drafts and free agency periods to begin to even fill most of these holes. The 49ers still need to decide who they will utilize at quarterback and if Colin Kaepernick will remain on the team with his gigantic cap hit. The 49ers are going to face some tough decisions in the upcoming months.
