Cowboys 2016 NFL Draft Targets: Ezekiel Elliott, Carson Wentz, Derrick Henry, Laquon Treadwell, Paxton Lynch, Joey Bosa Options?

The Dallas Cowboys have the number four overall pick in the draft this year and with the Cowboys being the Cowboys, there is rampant speculation about what the team could do with the selection.

Many around the NFL are convinced that the team will go after a quarterback with the way things went last season with Tony Romo getting injured, but Jerry Jones said to the media last month that the team doesn't necessarily need to take a quarterback at number four. Being in the top five means that the team is guaranteed to get a top prospect, but there is always a chance the Cowboys consider moving down and adding picks later on in the draft.

If the Cowboys do stay at four, they will have the chance to draft a backup for Romo, or they could target another offensive position like running back or wide receiver. Players like Joey Bosa, Laquon Treadwell, Jared Goff and Jalen Ramsey are all getting buzz as potential top five picks, while Carson Wentz has also started to get some hype after his performance at the Senior Bowl. The Cowboys have a major need at the backup quarterback position and they may not be in the top five of the draft for a long time, meaning they could look at taking advantage of that spot.

Most early mock drafts have Goff going to the Browns at number two, but if Cleveland is enamored with Wentz, it could leave Goff for the Cowboys. Mike Mayock at NFL Network thinks that the Browns, Chargers and Cowboys all could be potential landing spots for a quarterback in the top five and that could make for some interesting moves if the Browns go after Goff. The Cowboys likely will not want to trade up to get Wentz or Goff, but if they feel those players are worth it, expect Jones to at least make some calls.

Wentz has the size and the arm to be an NFL quarterback and while he comes from an FCS school, the Cowboys are a perfect example of what an FCS quarterback can be with Romo also going to an FCS school. Goff is coming off of a big season with over 4700 passing yards and 43 touchdowns, but the team may not get the chance to draft him if the Browns take him at number two. Paxton Lynch could also be a target for the Cowboys if Goff or Wentz don't end up as the selection, as he has also been generating some hype heading into draft workouts.

But if the Cowboys don't go after a QB, there are plenty of other options at number four. Laquon Treadwell is considered to be the top WR in the draft and he could be a nice fit next to Dez Bryant on offense. Ezekiel Elliott and Derrick Henry are considered to be the top running backs and after what happened with Joseph Randle this season, the Cowboys could use some depth behind Darren McFadden. If Joe Bosa somehow slips out of the top three, expect the Cowboys to consider that move to help bolster the defensive line.
