Washington Nationals Trade Rumors: Span Acquired from Minnesota Twins

The Washington Nationals acquired centerfielder Denard Span Thursday afternoon from the Minnesota Twins.

The deal went 1 for 1 as they sent a 22-year-old right-handed hurler, Alex Meyer, to Minnesota and will now be rocking a Twins uniform in 2013. Meyer was second in the Nationals' Top 20 prospects..

Before we get you more info on the young pitcher the Nationals gave away, let's cover what Span will bring to the Nationals.

Span has speed, a great glove, is a contact hitter and can get on base.

Last season, he hit .283, stole 17 bags and was constantly on the highlight reel.

This will be the first time Span plays outside of Minnesota. The Twins drafted him back in 2002 and had spent the last 10 years with the organization.

He is owed just a tad over $10 million over the next two seasons and has a club option for $9 million in 2015.

Already packed with pitching talent, the Nationals gave up their prospect Meyer is fresh off his first season in the minor league system.

Meyer had an excellent season as he spent time with both the Harrisbug Senators and Potomac Nationals. He finished with a 2.86 ERA in 129 innings pitched and struck out 139 batters. He only gave up six home runs in the entire season and opponents hit just .211 against him.

With the acquisition of Span, the Nationals take away an option from the Atlanta Braves who are currently searching for an outfielder who can leadoff.
