The rumors around the Dallas Cowboys quarterback situation will not stop until they solve it. With Tony Romo set to undergo another surgery on his collarbone, his longevity in the league is being questioned and the Cowboys need to prepare themselves. With the No.4 pick in the NFL Draft, there are so many options the team could take for a backup. While Johnny Manziel has told friends that Dallas is interested in him, could Robert Griffin III be the better pick?
Yes, Manziel will be available at the end of March but that does not mean the Cowboys need to sign him. According to ESPN's Ed Werder, Manziel believes the Cowboys will sign him once he is released from the Browns, but front office officials do not want that coming true. Owner Jerry Jones has admitted that he almost drafted Manziel as a rookie, but the team was too invested in Romo at the time. Now Jones has the chance to get the quarterback again, but the Dallas Morning News is reporting the front office does not want the move to be made.
Todd Archer of ESPN.com believes the chances Manziel signs are slim. So what about Robert Griffin III? Cowboy favorite Troy Aikman believes it will happen. Griffin is another quarterback set to be released after falling out of favor with the Washington Redskins. Griffin is no guarantee. The Cowboys know what they are getting with the quarterback which could be enticing for the short-term, but he is not the future of the franchise. Jones will be tempted and could make the move, but getting someone to develop is the better option.
The Cowboys have the No.4 draft pick and while the quarterback class this year is not strong, there are options to develop for the future. According to the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys could wait until the second round for someone and pass up on Jared Goff, Paxton Lynch and Carson Wentz. The talent drop off is not steep from them to players like Kevin Hogan, Cody Kessler or Jake Coker. Most mock drafts believe the Cowboys could target someone like Joey Bosa or Vernon Hargreaves in the first round to help with their defense and hold off on the quarterback.
Dallas could even wait one more year to make the move if they really believe Romo is going to be healthy in 2016. Next season could see players like Deshaun Watson and Baker Mayfield come out. They are much strong options to work with than someone like Wentz. The Cowboys would be wise to really look at the situation. Next season they could get their hands on two Heisman trophy candidates whereas this year they would simply be settling for an option.
